Abstract. We provide closed-form formulas for the general solution of a nonlinear third order difference equation, which considerably generalizes some results in the literature, conduct some analyses of the results on local and global stability and give theoretical explanations for some closed-form formulas for solutions of some special cases of the equation appearing in the literature.
